How to Hand Sew a Mini Christmas Stocking

Posted by Unknown on Sunday, December 22, 2013

A miniature Christmas stocking is delightful – it can be used for a tree decoration or as a bag for a small gift such as jewelery or sweets, and it is both a fun and easy project to make at home. For children first learning how to sew, this is a simple early project to make.

Edit Steps

  1. Make a template. Draw the shape of a stocking on a piece of paper.

  2. Cut out the template.

  3. Pin it to the fabric. You can either pin it to two pieces of fabric at the same time or pin it to single pieces twice.

  4. Cut around the template through the fabric.

  5. You will now have two pieces of fabric shaped like stockings.

  6. Thread your needle. For the stocking shown in this article, double thread was used but single thread will also work.

  7. Face the two pieces of fabric together, inside out. Pin in place. You will be sewing the stocking the wrong side first and then turning the stocking back out the right way at the end.

  8. Sew around the edge of the stocking shapes. Keep sewing until you reach the other edge, leaving the top opening part unstitched. Tie a knot to finish off the sewing.

  9. Turn the bag inside out. Your stocking is now ready.

    • Turn down the top to neaten the finish. Stitch into place if wished.

    • Decorate the stocking if needed. Add decorative elements, or write a short message on the stocking, such as "Merry Christmas!" or "Happy Holidays!"

  10. Stuff it with treats or use it as an ornament on the tree. Attach a small loop of yarn or ribbon to form a hook at the top edge of the stocking if you're intending to use it as a decoration.

Edit Tips

  • Follow these same steps, only draw the stocking bigger, to make a large stocking.

  • Unwanted denim is good to use up for this project.

  • You can also use felt to make a stocking. Felt makes a very neat, stylized finish.

  • Even if you don't have a printer, you can easily copy the template shown here by free hand and cut it out to follow as a template.

Edit Warnings

  • Always be careful when using sewing needles. Don't leave them lying around after use – put them back in their original holder.
